Electric Air Pump - electric air pump, air mattress pump

Let's keep this short and to the point.

Pros:

- High air volume - inflated a 4 person (104", 3 air chambers) towable in about 5 minutes, with about 90 seconds of that attributed to moving from one air chamber to the next.

- Long cord - reached from the battery compartment over the back seat to the swim platform without an issue

Cons:

- A bit noisy - comparable to an electric drill (110 VAC plug-in style). Since the pump was not on for long, I didn't think it warranted subtracting a star.

- Gets warm fairly quickly - Again, not an issue since the pump does its job in a hurry. Kwik Tek Airhead High Pressure Air Pump (12-Volt)

Of all of the pumps out there, this is probably the best 12-volt of them all. I have two inflatable kayaks, one in California & one in Maui. I have one of these pumps in both locations. The other 12-volt pumps that are out there, plug into a cigarette lighter outlet and use a thin wire to conect the 12-volt power to the pump. That makes for insufficient voltage to completely inflate the kayak. As a result, you end up having to also have a hand-pump to top off the inflation. This pump connects directly to your 12-volt battery. As a result, it has the necessary voltage to completely inflate the boat, without the need for another hand-pump to top off the process.

This pump is strong enough to quickly blow up large towable toys. The only downside is that you have to connect this unit directly to the battery terminals rather than connecting it to a 12 volt outlet. Of course this is by specific design and allows for a higher volume of air.

The unit is loud, but because it is fast it won't be on long. If you have a large inflatible towable then this unit is for you otherwise you may want a quieter, slower 12v cigarette outlet model.

2010 UPDATE: We've had this Kwik Tek unit for two boating seasons now and it has proved quite durable. We blow up a large three man towable and the huge MantaRay with Wings towable (no longer on the market). The Kwik Tek is both fast and durable.

Like us, you should be prepared to loan out your Kwik Tek high pressure pump to other boaters while you're on the water.

I purchased this pump for inflating my kayaks (that needed 2 psi of pressure).

The pump is well-built and looks sturdy. It makes a lot of noise when in use, and it also gets hot quite fast (I am really curious if it will prove to be reliable).

I measured the pressure built up by the pump with a precision manometer: with car engine off it makes around 1.8psi, with car engine on (higher voltage), it is about 2.0psi. Anyway, this is not the claimed 2.5psi.

But in the end I can achieve the pressure I need for inflating my kayaks in a short time with it so I am overall happy.

I've tried many types of air pumps and nothing comes close to this one, it inflates my 4 person raft in under 2 minutes. It's great because it hooks up to the trolling motor's battery for inflation and then it can be stored on the raft taking up little room. I highly recommend this product.

This is a follow up after about one full season of moderate use. Two weeks ago the pump started giving off a rattling noise and the performance visibly reduced. The initial thought was that one of the bearings needed lubrication but the problem turned out to be more serious. The gear assembly is made out of plastic and over time tension on the belt allowed some slippage which caused friction and melted all the teeth completely off. The pump is now useless unless I can find replacement gears (for the record the pump was never on for more than 4 - 5 min. at a time).

For the price I paid it is not a major loss, but my initial expectation was at least 2 - 3 seasons of work. If I don't find another manufacturer with better quality product I will probably reorder the same unit since I have gotten used to the speed and pressure this pump delivers.

Original review:

The pump is litte yet powerful. Inflates devices without need to manually top off. Small size is a plus in terms of portability. Inflation rate and pressure both worked to my satisfaction. Cables are long enough and reach the car battery with plenty of slack. Inflation hose seems sturdy enough.

The only negative things found were the pupm tipping over from its stand while in process and the pvc clamp handle covers sliding off a little.

In short great and affordable little pump. Recommend.

I really like this pump. It's powerfull and comes with many fittings conveniently tied to the end of the hose for quick use. It made quick work of our big floaties with large air ports and blew them up nice and firm. Also did a good job of pulling air back out of them for storage. My only complaint is that it is quite loud. Also, I wouldn't try to do a large floatie that's only got a port for the needle fitting (see photo). It'll do it, but it will take quite a while. Best to do those by mouth. This is a real quality pump for better quality floaties with high-volume ports. Worth the extra $10-$15 over the cheaper pumps.

The kwik tek airhead pump works great has a few assorted inflation adapters to work with low pressure high volume inflatable water toys and has an adapter that keeps you from overfilling the chambers. Unit is really quick and powerful the components such as battery clips look like they will last a couple of seasons with no problem, it will not work with cigarette lighter adapter due to its amperage draw and must be connected directly to the battery I knew this going in so not a concern rather its a good indication of its potential power . The size is roughly 8x8x8 inches so small enough to keep tucked away in the boat without much problem. - Airhead - Electric Air Pump - Air Mattress Pump'

Projector - viewsonic

I've only had my ViewSonic PJD5123 one day, which is a little premature for reviewing, but with only one review posted, I thought another would be helpful. I actually made my purchase on that review's recommendation, since I could find no others.

First, let me say that my purchase was largely price-driven. I figured I'd have to buy a used projector, but the low price Amazon charged was the hook that caused me to bite on this brand-new one. My second criterion was that it had to work with a Mac; it does! I did have to purchase an extra cable for my Macbook Pro unibody ($29.99 from Apple). I could have gotten a third party cable for much less (and may still do that for a backup), but the reviews on them were not as favorable as those on the Apple one.

So I took the plunge, even paying an extra $4 (Amazon Prime) to have it delivered in two days. It arrived on time and I found everything in the box as advertised. The written documentation is worthless, but their CD has much good information. You can also go to the ViewSonic website and download their PDF manual to read before your purchase arrives (highly recommended).

I installed the software on my Macbook Pro, connected the ViewSonic PJD5123 and fired it up. My computer (running OS X 10.6.7) recognized the projector and the computer screen's image shone on the white wall across the room, but it was very blurry. My heart sank. Thinking I'd bought a pig in a poke, I began lamenting the irritation of having to ship it back. Then, I began to turn the adjustments this way and that, and the picture on the wall became as clear as the one on the laptop screen. Was I ever relieved!

Then I wondered, will it work in an environment with a lot of daylight? Because I teach college courses and give seminars in rooms with many windows, I needed a projector with enough brightness to provide a clear text and picture in broad daylight. Now please do not misunderstand. The picture and text are better at night, but they are just fine in the daylight.

Someone may wonder how it works for movie watching. I've been watching movies on my 17" computer screen, so when I focused the ViewSonic with a movie projecting from it on the wall, I held my breath hoping that it would provide at least an acceptable picture. Wow, was I every pleased! I now have a huge screen on the wall that looks as good as the one on my computer. This is a bonus I'd not planned on.

Another concern for me is the voltage. I travel internationally and was delighted to find that this little projector works with 110-240v/50-60hz. With a plug adapter I'll be in business in the USA and foreign countries.

I almost forgot to mention that while there is no carrying case, a remote (with batteries!) is included. I've barely used the remote, but the features look sufficient for my use. As for the bag, what do you want for a rock bottom price? I'll likely go to the local thrift store and find a suitable case for less than three bucks!

Do I have any concerns or disappointments? So far I'm not disappointed at all. This projector does all the basic stuff I need and provides a very nice picture. My only concern is that when I shut it down I do not hear the fan running to cool it down before final shut down as the instructions indicate. I will call or email the company to see if its shut down feature is defective. My guess is that it is just fine. Other than that, it seems to work A-OK!

Please note that this is not a heavy-duty, latest and greatest feature-filled projector. For such a product you'll likely pay three or four times what this little fellow costs. But it does what I need and even has an eye to the future with a sticker that boasts "3-D READY."

ADDED 6 JULY, 2011

Just a quick note on the issue of the fan not running after shutdown to cool the projector: I emailed ViewSonic on Saturday of the July 4th weekend and they responded promptly the following Tuesday after the holidays. Here's their email response:

"Dear Valued Customer,

Thank you for contacting ViewSonic. Our newer projectors have a feature in which the unit will cool off on its own when needed. This new feature is so that the unit can be used more on the go , ViewSonic and a few other brand name companies have added such feature to recently manufactured projectors . If you should have further questions please contact us back. Thank you for giving us the opportunity to provide assistance."

Well, I couldn't believe what I'd read, so I called ViewSonic and talked to a technical person. He assured me that the email was, indeed, correct and that the unit is working just fine. He said ViewSonic designed this projector so that one could immediately pack it away after using it. For me, this is a blessing in disguise! It means that I can use the projector until the close of class, and immediately walk out with it. ViewSonic PJD5123 SVGA DLP Projector 120Hz/3D Ready, 2700 Lumens, 3000:1 DCR

The ViewSonic PJD5123 Projector is an effective and economical solution for movie viewing and PowerPoint presentations. Projecting from 25' it creates a bright 8' wide image. I connect it to a laptop with Bose Companion 2 Series II computer speakers creating an exceptional audio video experience. I use a Logitech wireless mouse to control presentations. You may need a case for the projector and possibly a longer video cable than the 6' cable provided. I am completely satisfied with the quality and performance of the projector and would recommend it to anyone in the market.

After shopping around and purchasing a few "cheap" projectors I realized that I needed to bight the bullet and buy something a bit more expensive. I did a ton of research and for my price point of around $300 I found this projector. I was a bit skeptical as I have had no luck with projectors recently and was nervous about throwing down so much money. Rest assured, this projector is worth it! I wanted a nice affordable movie projector for backyard movie nights with friends. Trying to find one that provided a great picture along with being affordable is no easy task. But this model is fantastic. I can't get over how crisp the picture is. And we use nothing but a white sheet pinned between two hammok posts. Even in a room with mid day sun the picture is still bright and clear. The fan is not too loud and the controls are very easy to work. My only concern is that finding the right connection for my macbook 5,1 unibody has been a hassle. We connected it to a cheap dvd player and it worked great. Also there are RCA connections and we hooked it up to a vintage receiver and speakers for an amazing sound experience. If you can afford the price, this is a great buy. I highly recommend this projector!!! - Viewsonic'

Bellydance Wear - belly dance, costume

This hip scarf is really pretty. I bought it for a class that I'm taking. Its is very pretty but the only reason why I didn't give it 5 stars is because the actual fabric the coins are attached to is very delicate. I can see myself poking my finger through it while trying to tie it on. Overall, a good buy. BellyLady Belly Dance Hip Scarf, Gold Coins Waves Style, Tote Bag Included

The picture is a little deceiving because the gold circles you see are not little pieces of metal but are plastic-type confetti things.. not really sure how to describe it.. but they don't really make any sound.. there are some pieces that clank together to make a sound but with the proper movements.. it just doesn't feel right.. but it looks super pretty!

I love that this scarf has a lot of coins attached so it makes a pleasing amount of noise when dancing. The pink is a very nice color and it appears to be constructed well. Including a tote bag is a nice touch, too.

THANK YOU SO MUCH I LOVE IT BUT THE ONLY THING IS I THOUGHT IT WAS BLACK I WOULD HAVE PREFERRED BLACK TO MATCH THE PANTS SO I'M TRYING TO FIGURE OUT WHAT TO DO ABOUT THE COLOR OF THE SCARF I DON'T LIKE THAT COLOR SORRY BUT OTHER THAN THAT I LOVE THE COINS AND STYE OF IT THANKS AGAIN IF YOU HAVE A BLACK ONE WITH GOLD COINS PLEASE LET ME KNOW ASAP! THANK AGAIN SELLER!

I didn't care for this coin scarf because it looked cheap in my opinion. Lots of coins but not very stylish. Gave it another dancer who was happy to have it and thought it was cute. Probably being nice because she was getting it for free. LOL

Love this hip scarf! Flashes well when dancing and sounds great. I tie mine very tight and have never had any issues with tearing. I use it for a zumba class and it has taken a lot already and is working very well. bought one for my instructor and she loves it also. I wasn't expecting it to be such a HOT pink But I am very happy with the color! :-)

Out of all my scarves this is by far my favorite. the color is exceptional the the intricate crochet and pailettes v-pattern is stunning. the pictures do not to them justice and lets admit the pictures are beautiful, but in person, well, breathtaking. i love it! my teacher insisted we "trade" lol yeah right! you will not be disappointed with this belly dance hip scarf! - Costume - Bellydance Wear - Hip Scarf - Belly Dance'

Eureka Tents - family tent, large tent

I had gone camping many years back and needed to upgrade my tent now that I had kids of age. This tent worked well for a family of five! We did a dry run of setting it up and it was fairly easy. I also took the opportunity to seal the seams. When we got to the campsite the dry run helped me to set up the tent in no time at all! Especially since it was starting to rain. The tent was dry throughout the night!

I also recommend a 16x10 tarp that can be placed underneath the tent. this will give you 4 feet of overlap that can extend from the tent entrance to place shoes etc. Great tent! Eureka Tetragon 1210 Family 12- Foot by 10-Foot Eight-Person Tent

I was a little disappointed with this tent after I pitched it in my backyard to the seal the seams (manufacturer's recommendation by the way - and a must). The tent alone is nice. Obviously a 12' by 10' footprint is plenty of room. But the fly is poorly designed.

Since there are doors on either side, I thought the fly would cover the rear just like the front (in the picture) but that's not the case. The brim rods are thin fiberglass poles that fit through sleeves in the fly and they attach to exterior guide holes. But the umbrella fly can only be staked on one side.

I placed stakes where the loops are in between the corners to keep it up for 24 hours and let the seam seal cure. It held up nicely until a 15 mph (or so) breeze came through and turned it upside down the following afternoon. All loops that were staked, except the front two where the fly comes out, came out of the ground. Consequently, the left side of the fly completely ripped. So stake out everything/every time in case Mother Nature decides to sneeze on this tent.

You will definitely need a tarp to place underneath it since the floor is made out of the same nylon taffeta as the walls. And I would replace the yellow plastic stakes with aluminum/steel stakes. The tent may stay put in inclement weather but if it's really nasty, I suspect some rain will make its way through the mesh ceiling even with the fly on because the front/rear do not come below the ceiling like the sides.

The sewn-in gear loft is on the right and just below the mesh ceiling. It can be attached horizontally to store things just above the walls or it can be attached vertically but that will block the view from that window. It would have been nice if the whole thing was detachable. But it will work if/when needed.

The separate room divider can be attached/removed via dog bones fed through loops. It divides the tent into rooms starting from just above the ground and up to the mesh ceiling. If someone is tall, there goes your privacy.

That being said, I think the tent will be OK. I thought I was lucky when I got this on sale for under $100. But I'm glad that's all I paid. Fortunately, Eureka sells replacement parts so I ordered another fly for $39 plus shipping.

Update (May 25, 2008): I received the fly replacement and it is a huge improvement over the one that originally came with the tent. The new design does not incorporate the flimsy brim rods. And it arches over on both sides where the doors are located. One caveat: you will need to order the pole that has been incorporated into the new design. Otherwise, it will just hang down and could get snagged by the door's zipper.

When I went to pitch the tent at the camp site by myself, I noticed the fiberglass poles had stress cracks where the poles connect. So while the tent can be pitched by one person, having another person will help reduce that. I would have given this four stars with the new fly but since that happened, it's still 3 stars in my mind.

I was looking for a family tent for 4 people (2 adults, 2 toddlers) I had some basic requirements:

- Big, but not huge

- 2 doors

- Center divider

- Decent quality that would hold up to a number of years of Spring/Summer camping

- Although mainly to be used in Summer months, needed to be fairly waterproof due to occasional Northwest showers. I did about a week of online and in-store research before purchasing

I set up in our backyard last weekend in order to see how it looked, and to seal the seams. I did the setup by myself, which was not impossible, but definitely would have been easier with 2 people (issue mainly is dealing with the long poles that form the dome)

Quality seems good...not top-of-the line good, but for < $200, it's nice for the price. Height is OK (I'm 6'3"). I initially was looking at cabin-style tents due to good center height, but decided I didn't want to have a tent with that big of a footprint.

Since it came with tape-sealed seams, I thought I'd do a "quickie" seam sealing job. Big mistake, a storm came in and I ended up with a decent amount of water on one side of the tent floor (probably coming in from corners or side guy points) Once it dried out, I did a more thorough job, and all seems well now.

Overall very pleased with the choice of this tent. - Cabin Tent - Tent - Family Tent - Large Tent'

Kindle Accessory - kindle accessory, kindle 3 case

I've noticed that like myself customers have been concerned primarily with two things regarding the new lighted case from amazon. These are: 1)The weight and 2) The uneven lighting. My review will briefly discuss these two things.

1)The Weight - The lighted leather case is a nice weight, sturdy and comfortable to hold. In ounces it is about the weight of the kindle itself however don't let that concern you. With the case on it feels like a medium sized paperback, however it is far much more comfortable to hold. It's easy to hold the case open like a book (nice for couch and table type reading) or to fold the front back and close it with the bungee so that the bungee doesn't hang around (this is good for bedtime reading).Closing the front back with bungee keeps the case folded in position and you don't have to worry about it bothering you. BTW THIS CASE FOLDS BACK 100% - Very comfortable. In sum very comfortable to read with the case and very sturdy.

2) The uneven lighting - Amazon's pictures don't do this case justice. The light hits the ENTIRE screen. Yes if you look closely it's brighter in the top right corner then in the bottom left but Amazon's pics make it look the top is lighted while the bottom is dark. There is good light all over the screen. Trust me I'm fussy about these things - the lighting will not bother you, your entire screen will be lighted and it is extremely pleasant to read in the dark.

*Final Thoughts - Great case, good quality, works well, kindle feels very secure and protected (I would feel comfortable slipping this case into my backpack or suitcase and I think it would sustain some mild impact). Lastly hinges are a non-issue, casing of the kindle will not get damaged with normal or even slightly aggressive use. You could damage the kindle by trying to pull the back of the case but you'd have to really force it to cause any sort of damage to your kindle. The hinges work fine and should not be a concern to any case user.

Update 1st December 2010:

Have now been using the case for 3 months. Leather still looks impeccable. Some people expressed concern that the bungee cord might loosen with use. I have not experienced any loosening so far. Quality of the product has proven outstanding. I've occasionally spilled or messed the cover, just a wipe with a damp cloth has cleaned it up, and the case looks like new. Have to admit I enjoy the feel of the case in my hand, there's just something great about taking your kindle to a coffee shop in this case, it just looks and feels so classy. Also with regard to the hinges: I have had no scratches on my kindle or any other issues, so I remain convinced that the hinges are a non issue. Kindle Lighted Leather Cover, Steel Blue (Fits 6" Display, Latest Generation Kindle)

I was hesitant to buy this cover mostly due to the pictures in its listing, which seem to show a light that doesn't even extend to the opposite corner. The fact that I have not been impressed with the Amazon's Kindle covers in the past didn't help. I went ahead and purchased it because the cover I wanted isn't available yet and I don't like to take my Kindle out and about without a cover. Now I am glad that I went ahead and bought it.

PROS:

1. The light is much better than I thought it would be. Using it in a darkened room I found that the light did the job very well. In a pitch black room, it performs even better. While the screen corner opposite the light is a bit dimmer than other areas, there is no problem reading the page at all.

2. The light gets its power from the Kindle itself, through the gold-plated hinges which attach it to the cover, so batteries are a thing of the past. When your Kindle goes to sleep, the light will go out as well. It will also turn off when you slide it back into the case.

3. The cover is slim, well-fitted and very easy to attach and detach using the hinges. The inside has good padding. The leather outer surface has a nice pebbled texture with the exception of a smooth area along the edge of the front. While stiff enough to protect the reader, the cover is slight flexible and the front easily folds behind when reading so you can hold your Kindle with one hand if you like.

4. A great plus is that the cover has an elastic cord that fits into a groove on the front of it. This holds your cover closed (unlike the original Kindle 2 cover that would flop open in your purse & let things slide into it) and easily distinguishes the front from the back--important as many owners of the Kindle 2 cover accidentally opened it from the back, which could cause cracking along the Kindle's spine.

CONS:

I haven't found any, really. The light Is a bit hard (stiff) to pull out of the cover, but then you wouldn't want it to be flopping out when you don't want to use it so that is more of a Pro than a Con.

The one concern I do have is about pulling the light in and out--I wonder if whatever wiring or conductor that is used to get the power from the hinges to the light will eventually break. But that is something to find out down the road. Right now, the more I use this cover, the more I like it. - Kindle 3 Covers - Kindle Accessory - Kindle Covers - Kindle 3 Case'

Gift Idea - pashmina, pashmina shawl

I BOUGHT THIS SHAWL TO MATCH A GOLD STAPLESS BUSTIER DRESS. IT MATCHED PERFECT!!!!!!

THE COLORS IN THE PICTURE WERE EXACT!

I WAS SO HAPPY AS IT WAS NOT TOO HEAVY, YET NOT TOO LIGHT AND KEPT ME SHOULDERS & ARMS WARM AT A WEDDING WHERE THE AIR CONDITIONING WAS TOO HIGH.

IT'S A BEAUTIFUL SHAWL AND NOT DOWDY LOOKING AT ALL. 70" x 28" Double Layer Jacquard Paisley Pashmina Shawl / Wrap / Stole - Copper Brown / Gold

I've owned other pashminas with less bold patterns but was attracted to the paisley pattern and bought the black and grey/white. As a cover-up with a solid coloured outfit this shawl is a pretty contrast. Very nice. You may probably want to choose more than one - you won't regret it.

We bought this wrap for our niece, at the time a HS senior. She wore it to her senior formal, and now uses it in college. She said she received many compliments for it and it really brought out the color of her eyes and went well with her red hair. She recommends this highly.

I purchased this Pashmina to use as a wrap for a gold dress and it was a perfect match. The shawl added just the righ contrast to my outfit that I was looking for. I wore this outfit to my husband's class reunion and it added class to the dress. - Pashmina Shawl - Pashmina Wrap - Gift Idea - Pashmina'

Laserjet Printers - duplex, hp

Solid, comfortable printer - nice "office" feel. Load up the drivers and away you go - at least with Mac - and through Airport. Other reviews make a fair point about being a bit noisy - I have it sitting on a fairly hollow wooden cupboard which may accentuate this issue. However for usual home printing regime I can't see this being a big issue for most. HP P2035 LaserJet Printer Monochrome

I have had this printer for several months and have only recently been printing stuff on a regular basis. The cartridge says it is good for 2300 pages, and that goes by quickly. The replacement cost is $83+ dollars, which is nearly half the cost of the printer. That is roughly 3.6 cents a page. I suppose this is okay, but $83 seems high to me. Must be fantastic technology involved.

Otherwise the printer works very fine.

Perhaps HP has had a bad run of late, but our first printer worked for 2 weeks before it started jamming. The replacement worked for 2 days before it started jamming. We opted to not try a third and went with another manufacturer, I would say avoid this printer until they iron out their feeding issues.

This printer is replacing an older version of a HP Laserjet printer. I wanted a small footprint, since I am limited for space. It is all that other reviews have indicated. It is fast, easy to set-up and install.

The only reason I give it 4 stars is that it is noisy for my home office, and I can only get 2500 page toner cartridges not 3500 page cartridges.

I can live with the noise if I get the great results in useability. I do recommend this printer.

I purchased this printer to function as a second printer when color is not required.

Set up is easy and went smoothly. Printing is fast, and quality very good to excellent. If you need a fairly low cost laser printer, this is a good one. I recommend it.

This is a very nice printer for the price. Of course you aren't going to get all the bells and whistles of a more expensive unit, but that is to be expected.

The print quality and print speed are more than adequate for office use. The paper for the manual feed tray comes in at an unusually steep angle, which makes loading the tray a little tricky, but it's not a real big issue.

I love this printer. I have been doing taxes for many years and needed to replace my old HP LaserJet. This printer is fast, produces quality prints, was easy to set up, and is reasonable priced. I would highly recommend it.

I purchased this printer 6 months ago and it has been a good solid printer. Recently I upgraded my iMac to Snow Leopard OS 10.6 and realized just about every driver for HP products is available except the P2035 and a handful of others. HP is working on a driver for Snow Leopard but does not have a date yet. If you have a iMac running Snow Leopard heads up!!!

I got this printer for $150 and thought it was a steal. It prints very well, although it's pretty noisy. However, after being aware for several years of the contradiction of cheap inkjets -- manufacturers would practically give away the printers because they charged roughly $3500 a gallon for ink -- I realize that I have been suckered. Yes, this printer is inexpensive, but it quickly runs out of ink and you have to buy the shorter-life, more expensive CE505A cartridges (about $88) instead of the more cost-effective CE505X cartridges (less than twice the price, but three times the number of pages). So if you want to be able to use the 505X cartridges, you should buy the printer that uses those. Also, Amazon doesn't sell the CE505A cartridges, so I had to buy mine from Staples. I hate feeling like a sucker!

This printer makes a hellacious noise every time the engine starts-which is every time it prints. The "quiet mode", a critical selling point for me, cannot be enabled on a Mac operating system, even though the advertising says the printer is Mac compatible. Which, if you don't mind the really unpleasant racket, it is. Even worse, the User Guide that came in the installation documentation specifically sets out the method for enabling quiet mode in Mac. It doesn't work-and can't be made to work in the Mac environment as the printer is delivered. After hours of trying to find a solution through Apple and HP Support, I was informed (by HP) that I can enable quiet mode on this printer only through a Windows environment, and then when I reconnect to my Mac, the printer will be in quiet mode. What a wonderful fix. When you make a statement in your advertising that is knowingly untrue, and you compound the misrepresentation by including a second misrepresentation in the User Guide, it is to my mind nothing less that a fraud. HP will have to pay me to have another of their products. You'd be better off buying a printer from a sleazy used-car dealer. - Hp - Mac Os X - Laserjet - Duplex'

Do It Yourself - homestead

By any chance, have you, like me, wanted to be able to make truly useful things for years? Intended to convert to cleaning in a cheap, responsible way? But just kept finding books of recipes and tips that didn't deliver, were overly complicated, called for such a wide variety of ingredients, many obscure and expensive, that you started to doubt it'd save any money at all, even if you didn't botch a single thing? I mean, what's the point of trading out my very long domestic shopping list of items I can find at Target with an equally long list of items that have to be gathered from the far-flung corners of the globe?

This is not one of those books. This is brilliant in it's simplicity. The recipes and ingredients are so elemental, the authors might be the Prometheus of Home Ec. I've had the book for five days. Not only do I not need to buy half that domestic list anymore (and I imagine that will only grow as I work my way through more projects), but I don't know what I'm going to do with the stuff -the shaving cream, the conditioner, the toilet cleaner, the windex- that's already in the house because this homemade stuff is BETTER than the store bought junk. What I like best about this book might be how it's changed the feel of my whole place. There's life and processes everywhere: soap is curing, the hair rinse is steeping, seedlings are sprouting, herbs are growing. I look at things around my home and see new uses for them. I see something I typically buy and think "I could make that." There's something peacefully reassuring about this but more so it's a loud humming of anticipation, excitement, and almost manic creativity. After about 8 projects, I started thinking "There needs to be a recipe for solid perfume! I'd really love a recipe for throat lozenges! With honey! Oh, and ginger! And something to freshen the front loading washing machine so I don't have to buy those Tide packets!" Before this book, it wouldn't have even occurred to me to think that it was possible. So thank you.

A few more thoughts:

If you are an apartment dweller, and tired of being completely overlooked by other DIY books that assume everyone can compost and keep a few chickens, then you will especially appreciate projects 49 (Free Fertilizer from Weeds) and 61 (Worm Farming), neither of which require composting or manure. Worms will break down your apartment's kitchen prep scraps -your coffee grounds, spent tea, egg shells, carrot peels, the lettuce you forgot about in the produce drawer; they are an especially elegant solution if you happen to have a garbage disposal that regurges ground up food into your dishwasher during the rinse cycle (your landlord may insist it's because you don't clean off your plates well enough, but s/he's wrong). For apartment livestock, you might borrow from their other book The Urban Homestead (Expanded & Revised Edition): Your Guide to Self-Sufficient Living in the Heart of the City (Process Self-reliance Series) and consider pets with benefits, such as a rabbit or a few quail. Like chickens, rabbit manure is wonderful for plants. Unlike chickens, theirs doesn't have to be composted first but can be used as is or passed through the worms first (it's like they were designed with renters in mind; some people even attach a worm bin underneath the rabbit's hutch so the waste transfers itself). A few quail will keep you supplied in adorable eggs for your Bento box lunches. But back to this book: You may also get good use out of Project 56 (making your own seedling flats); they make a compelling case for seeds ("cheap", "disease-free", and "better variety") and I appreciate that the flats are wood (I'm squeamish about growing food in plastic). There isn't anything I've found on container planting in here; they do discuss pots and self-watering containers in The Urban Homestead. At the moment, after gleaning a few tidbits from the book Apartment Gardening but otherwise not getting much out of it, I am using Grow Great Grub: Organic Food from Small Spaces to keep my newly acquired herbs alive and I love it; it covers companion planting, mulching, various DIY fertilizers, and more. If that is an aspect of Making It that turns out to really get you going, I so far enthusiastically recommend it (and will post an update if some disastrously bad advice emerges one day). Essentially, the book FOR apartment farmers still has yet to be written, but Making It does more than the other homesteading books presently on my shelf and adds a few more pieces to my collection of apartment solutions. Martha Stewart has a simple system for watering your plants when you're out of town involving just a bucket of water and one piece of rope per pot; the Windowfarms Project, which I only just saw today (May 28, 2011) in Urban Farm magazine, is jaw-dropping. An expanded section of more of these kinds of innovative no-yard ideas would be wonderful in a second edition of this book.

For the home brewing and mead making sections, I handed the book off to my husband. He said it was as thorough as something this brief can be -the technicals are all there. To give you a specific example of what he means, Step 18 ends with "Keep the end of the hose at the bottom of the carboy to minimize splashing the beer around." That's perfectly true, but it might be helpful to know that they're not just talking about minimizing mess; splashing and sloshing will make the beer taste (in my husband's words) "like cardboard." So, if you are good about reading through a project before you begin and diligently following the instructions (like my husband), you'll have no trouble. If (like me) you usually have to be told "No, really, this is important and here's why", you may need a book or mentor that allows for that kind of expanded information.

For the chicken sections, I sent a copy of the book to my father-in-law, who already keeps chickens and built his own coop. He said the guidelines are solid and the diagram on pages 264-265 is very much like his chicken coop. It is worth noting that Project 65 Build A Chicken Coop is just guidelines by which to build a chicken coop, not step by step instructions of the Tab A Slot 1 nature; for floor plans, we would suggest BackyardChickens dot com. June 20, 2011 Update: Now that we are looking at building a chicken coop ourselves, I'm finding their guidelines extremely helpful. I can use their "what we like about ours, what we'd design differently if we had to do it over again" insightful as I look at the many 'floor plans' available online. I can weed out duds easily instead of having to learn about their flaws the hard way. July 7, 2011: A Tuff Shed fell into our laps recently, which we will be modifying into a hen house, making me further realize the wisdom behind Project 65 being advice rather than a single one-size-fits-no-one floor plan.

Only 1 suggestion for the next edition:

Multiple Indexes. I like the way the book is organized; arranging projects from easiest to hardest really does let you try several things the moment you get the book and they are every bit the "gateway projects that may addict you to a more homegrown lifestyle." But after that initial introduction, an index that organizes projects by utility (Medicine & Comfort, Cleaning & Laundry, Kitchen & Entertaining, Grow It) and an index of materials and ingredients (I bought, say, coconut oil for laundry soap and it would be nice to see at a glance that I can also use coconut oil for lip balm, creams, and the shampoo bar) would be very helpful. This would also show potential book buyers exactly where these projects will save them money, direct them to the projects that might be of greatest interest to them, and show them that if they were thinking about buying, say, some beeswax for a lip balm it will have many other uses to justify the purchase.

Consider getting a notebook in which to record prices (I suggest a notebook because as of July 25, 2011 the few pages I'd started with no longer keep up with the homesteading renaissance going on over here). Take soap for example. I can write down what price per ounce my body wash or bar currently costs in one column and then record the price per ounce of each ingredient (then divide by the number of ingredients to get the per ounce cost of the finished soap) in the soap recipe I'd like to try. Instantly, I can see how much money I'm saving or, if I don't quite like the margin, I can, say, look for a cheaper lye before I begin.

Otherwise, unless the authors have ideas on harnessing solar energy using nickels and paperclips with which I can power my laptop, router, modem, and cell phone, I'd call this book complete ;) Or perhaps a hand-crank turn table for an odds-and-ends gramophone.

If you want a head start on gathering supplies for projects 1, 3, 4, 5, 7, 9, 10, 11, 24, 36, 37, 38, 39, 40 and 42 (for projects 6 and 35, add fresh herbs; for project 25, add Borax; additionally, Borax is optional with some of the 16 recipes contained in project 24 ) while you wait for your copy to arrive in the mail, I would suggest the following (much of which you may already have):

INGREDIENTS

liquid castile soap (a little will last you a while)

baking soda (the biggest, cheapest per ounce box you can find)

white distilled vinegar (biggest, cheapest per ounce you can find)

beeswax (5 oz should cover deodorant, salves, creams, lip balm, and furniture polish at least, as well as a solid perfume if you're interested)

lye (7 oz will make a batch of olive oil soap, a batch of shampoo bars, and a batch of laundry soap bars)

olive oil (biggest, cheapest per ounce you can find)

extra virgin olive oil (just what's already probably in your pantry should be fine)

flaxseed oil (24 oz is plenty) besides furniture polish, you can also use this for DIY leather cleaner and for seasoning cast iron; see customer images

coconut oil (23 oz)

castor oil (5 oz) -ONLY required for the shampoo bar, though I'll be trying it in some balms

rosemary, peppermint, and tea tree essential oils to start if you want to make the shampoo bar and deodorant. Otherwise, everything turns out lovely even unscented. As the essential oils are the most expensive thing (though they at least go a long ways), it's nice that they're entirely optional.

100 proof alcohol (ONLY for bug repellant and making medicines by tincturing herbs)

cream of tartar & a little powdered sugar (ONLY for the mints)

EQUIPMENT

a blender (necessary for soap making, very convenient for skin cream)

a digital scale (for soap making, but you may also find it useful in recipes calling for beeswax which is easier to measure by weight than teaspoon)

a stir stick, like a spare disposable chop stick or a paint stirring stick from a hardware store (necessary for soap making, convenient for balms and creams)

dishwashing gloves (only for soap making)

something to act as a mold, like an empty milk carton (half gallon, quart, even just a few creamer cartons; only for soap making)

a little pot with which to boil water (in which, for some recipes, you can fit a pyrex measuring cup)

a pyrex measuring cup in which to melt small amounts of ingredients double-boiler-style

if you haven't already, pick up a pack of microfiber towels (like a few of the orange and white ones from the auto section at Target). They trounce paper towels when it comes to cleaning anything.

a few canning jars with lids are nice but pyrex, tupperware, or a clean jar that you were about to recycle will work just as well

USEFUL JUNK

I've begun setting aside one or two containers of various types as I run out of things -Mrs Meyers spray bottles and one or two empty canisters that previously held Mrs Meyers counter scrub, a mint tin, a pump top spritzer bottle that used to be full of California Baby Detangler, and a few small tubs that were once The Body Shop's Body Butter, Burts' Bees Belly Balm, Badger Winter Wonder Balm -even pint-sized gelato tubs- to hold lotions and lip balm. You can also refill chapsticks and deodorant sticks. Making It: Radical Home Ec for a Post-Consumer World - Homestead'

Kindle Lighted Leather Cover

Kindle Lighted Leather Cover, Black (Fits 6" Display, Latest Generation Kindle)

Right now, the more I use this cover, the more I like it.'

Old School 80 Music

Five star is a familygroup from England. Two brothers and three sisters who became popstars and had some great successes in the eighties, especially in England. All these songs were hits in England and a lot of them also in the Netherlands, where I come from; they were quite popular. Hits like All fall down, Let me be the one, Find the time, Rain or shine and The slightest touch are catchy tunes, which were played a lot in the clubs in '85/ '86 and '87. Five star still makes records (Eclipse 2001) and the family lives in the States since 1990. I am a fan since day one and will always stay a fan. Especially the leadsinger Denise has a superb voice. This album represents the best of their work, but do not forget to check their latest album, which is still of the same high quality. Greatest Hits

If you love the 80's like I do, this is a must! Has the 80's stamped all over it...and the music is smooth and foot stomping too.

Sounds a lot like the Jackson 5 and En Vogue....but quite a few 80's bands sound the same anywayz. This band is not very well known in the US, and it is hard to find MP3 downloads for the tracks available here. But this greatest hits complilation is a good buy for all 'System Addict' fans. Happy groovin!

I cant believe I found this cd, its awesome.

It has all the best 5* songs and it brings back the great dance beat.

They have a likeness to The Jacksons and DeBarge and yet still they hold their own.

All the songs a great and they still sound great today.

This album is great, Five Star is a group I grew up listening to in the 80's a must have. It came in my post right on time when I need some musical upliftment. Good packaging, great music what more can I ask for. Thank you, I recommend this seller and product to all the old school 80's fanatics like me. Cheers.

There were many artists I loved in the 80s: Run DMC, Madonna, Whitney, Eric B.& Rakim, Jody Watley, New Edition, Prince, LL Cool J., Michael, Janet, and a 5 member R&B/Pop group of brothers and sisters that hailed from England named Five Star.

I loved these guys back in the day. Deniece, Doris, Lorraine, Stedman and Delroy could dance, sing, and had some of the catchiest R&B/Pop songs around. Sure some of the music was bubblegum, but it always catchy. The first video I ever saw of their's was "Crazy," (for some reason the song was left off of this collection!)

with them singing and having fun in an amusement park. From that point on, I was a fan. Their first CD, "Luxury of Life" got major spins in my house. My cousins and I learned the choreography from the "All Fall Down" video and would dance to it every time the video aired on BET. I even remember calling my local radio station and requesting "Love Take Over" when I was about 8 or 9 years old!

I was trying to find something for years on CD from Five Star but was unsuccessful. I received an Amazon gift card from a co-worker this past X-Mas. I was scrolling through New Edition CDs on the site and saw this Five Star CD advertised on that page. I almost flipped out of my chair! I quickly ordered the CD and have been playing it to death ever since! "Can't Wait Another Minute," "Strong As Steel," "When Ever You're Ready," and my personal favorite, "Let Me Be the One," which still sounds good and can go up against ANYTHING on the radio today and win!

I wonder what the group is up to nowdays? Deniece could sing her tail off and still should be recording. I wish the rest of the group well in their endeavors. If the Spice Girls and New Kids on the Block can reunite, then Five Star should do so. I might even travel across the pond to see a show!

I have loved this group since the 80s. I am American, and I know although they are beloved in England, we also loved them here in the States as well. I know ALL the songs on this greatest hits cd. I once had the casette tapes, but due to moving and items being shuffled around over the years... they were lost. Which is the reason why I am re-purchasing. I am actually commenting before my shipment arrives because I already know the songs, just haven't heard them in a while and looking forward to listening to them and re-living my teenage memories! I just love Denise and she has the best voice! If you are thinking of purchasing, I am here to say in advance you won't be disappointed! :)'

Ipod Touch Microphone

I have an iPod Touch 2G. Got this to record my stand-up classes and ended up using it for interviews as well. Great recording quality, easy to use.

You do need to purchase the iTalk premium app ($2 or so) and make sure you download Italk Sync to your computer.

Great quality, even in less than stellar rooms with lots of background noise.

Can't go wrong with this, esp considering the price.

Only drawback: you can't listen to it while you're recording because it uses the headphone jack. But, I just set it and forget it until I'm done recording.

Then I sync with my Mac and open with iTunes. Done. I've even dropped it into Bias Peak and other audio editing programs so I could send portions of the audio to classmates.

All very convenient and quick. Mini Microphone for iPhone 3G/iPod/touch/classic

I am using a non jailbroken 3G 64GB Ipod Touch and I can confirm that Skype works. Both the mic and the speaker can work at the same time, I believe Skype is the only application where this is possible. You make calls via speaker phone at all times, there is no option to keep the phone close to your head. This is simply because of the design of the device and the only way you can use voip. The build quality is very good, and there is no reason to purchase a competitor's mic which will cost 300% the price of this one. At less than $5, every single person with an ipod touch immediately needs to get this mic so that they can start making ridiculously cheap voip calls on an ipod of all things.

Edit: So I have been using Skype and this mic for a while now, and they work well most of the time. I have had several 30min-1hr conversations while other people were driving on the highway etc and they all remarked that the call quality was good. However, there are some people who I seem to go straight to voicemail, which I do not understand. So far this is only one person, but as he is using an AT&T iphone, I am not sure the problem. I have gotten a skype number and unlimited calling for 1 year plus voicemail for only $60. The touch can ring when other people call if skype is open or in the background. You are now able to jailbreak the latest 3.1.3 firmware so running skype in the background is easily doable. To run apps in the background, download backgrounder. To keep wifi on all the time, download insomnia.

If the mic is plugged in, however, you will hear no ring. You could keep the mic unplugged and connect it whenever you receive a call, but this obviously sucks. I suspect there will be some fix to this relatively soon, but this is so far the biggest roadblock in using the ipod touch as my main phone. Another downside is that receiving texts to your skype number is not as easy as simply texting to that number. Google voice, which is semi out now, does not have this problem. In any case, its worth paying $30 to get unlim calls for a year without the online number right now. Sending texts via skype is also somewhat expensive at 11 cents. On my jailbroken iphone that i use with tmobile, I only pay 10cents per text on a prepaid plan.

I used it for 3 meetings in a single day to do some basic recording for later review. Sadly when I tried to pull it out of the iPod the 3rd time the outside case came off in my hand. I would not buy this if I were you. Spend the extra money and get a quality product.

I thought this would be a nifty device to not only use for recording but also perhaps as a microphone for live chat on Skype using my iPod Touch g2. Unfortunately (unless I am doing something incorrectly with the plug in of this device), since it is plugged into the ONLY mini jack on the iPod it seems to record but while the device remains plugged in it cancels the sound, so you cannot hear what you just recorded unless you remove the device first. And so maybe a Skype conversation would be one way unless you removed the device between sentences "walky-talky" style. "Over...." Not an option. Anyone have any thoughts on this?

As far as the footprint of the mic, I take ALOT of vitimin supplements. I'm a bit scared this will go down the hatch some morning when I'm not paying attention!

updated review October 2009: I changed my stars from 5 to 1. The mic is not working anymore. I don't understand why. I take good care of my ipod and the mic and both experience regular wear and tear. It occupies memory space in my iPod but, there is no audio. Warning: Buy item at your own risk. You get what you pay for!

In Sept 2009 I said"It's cute. It's functional. I use it to record lectures with my ipod classic. It works great. I plug in my ipod to charge and the lectures go straight into my voice memos folder in iTunes. The downside is, the battery usage. Once I 'turn on' the voice recorder mode in my ipod, it totally drains the battery much faster than when I use my iPod to play regular songs. There's a little lag and also some freezing that happens on occasion, but not enough to bother me, since I paid less than five bucks for the gadget."'
