I am the librarian for a college that offers a digital filmmaking program. We bought the second edition for our library and our students and the faculty actually fought over it. I know for a fact that several bought the book for their personal use. The author has updated a valuable resource that is easy to understand and use. I really don't think there is anything else like this book. It would make a wonderful gift for anyone interested in actually making movies. We are adding the new edition to our collection ASAP! This is by far one of the most helpful books to a no-budget filmmaker-but only if you actually build the projects in the book. There are other plans on the web to build cranes and the like, but Dan goes out of his way to make sure that you can actually find the materials he lists. I've found that obtaining the material is by far the hardest part of the process, which can feel more like a scavenger hunt than shopping. (Many materials can be found at Home depot or Lowes, but Mom and Pop hardware stores seem to be much more helpful and get into the spirit of things when making the project. (People at Home depot acted like I was a crazy when I tried to explain what a Steadi-cam or a Car mount was.....)
The projects end results are sturdy, and you can feel safe attaching your expensive DV cameras to.
